Cayman Caravan - The Flying Adventure Of A Lifetime!
The Cayman Caravan is no longer planning tours, however, we may return to the sky in the future.

Although the overwater flight to Grand Cayman is well within the capability of most light aircraft, there's no point in pretending that this flight is risk free. Flight over the open ocean requires careful preparation and an understanding of basic survival and rescue techniques.

With other experienced pilots to offer help and advice and with lots of airplanes along the route to render assistance, the risk is greatly reduced. But reduced risk is not the same as no risk.

As an absolute minimum, the Cayman Caravan requires the following survival equipment: A personal flotation device for every passenger; one extra PFD is recommended. A raft capable of accommodating all of the crew and passengers: at least one signaling mirror but better yet, one for each passenger; fresh water in plastic containers that will float (gallon milk jugs work well, as does store-bought bottled water), a flashlight, sunscreen.

As part of your basic Caravan package, we'll provide one mirror; we will have a limited number of additional mirrors for purchase at Key West.

From the basic kit, you may wish to include additional gear. Other signaling devices, such as battery-powered strobelights, pyrotechnic flares and dye markers are a good idea. Chemical light sticks sold in hardware stores are a cheap, durable source of light and they're readily visible through the night vision goggles used by Coast Guard rescue crews.

If you have a handheld aviation or marine radio, consider buying a waterproof pouch and carrying it along in your survival kit, too. The pouches are readily available from marine supply stores. A small first-aid kit, to include bandages, burn ointment and other basics won't take up much space and may come in handy.

Of course, if you buy any of this equipment for the Cayman trip, it's a good idea to carry it in the airplane at other times, too. You may wish to purchase some sort of case to carry it all. We recommend a waterproof, floatable container called a Pelican case. These are available from marine, diving and photographic stores at reasonable cost or contact:

Pelican
2255 Jefferson St.
Torrance, CA 90501
310-326-4700

One retail source of Pelican and other cases can be found on the Web at http://www.cyberus.ca/~cases/

A low-cost alternative to the Pelican case is a jumbo Tupperware-type container available at grocery and hardware stores. These seal very tightly and will float if not too heavily loaded.

Aviation Survival Technologies can sell survival packs which contain many of the items above. These are assembled specifically with the Cayman Caravan overflight in mind. Basic price is $89.00.

At the briefing at Key West, we will provide some general instruction and tips on water survival, including how to deploy and use a liferaft, signaling devices and other survival gear.
